Resistive-Reactive Load Bank

Resistive and reactive load together, so generators, alternators and paralleling controls are tested the way they really run — at 0.8 power factor and full kVA.

Overview

Test the Whole Machine, Not Just the Engine

A resistive test loads the engine but barely asks anything of the alternator and voltage regulator. Real building loads — motors, transformers, drives — draw reactive current too. A resistive-reactive load bank adds controllable inductive load, so the alternator, excitation and paralleling controls are proven at full rated kVA. It is the standard for commissioning critical and paralleled generator plants.

  • Independent kW and kVAR control
  • 0.8 power factor at full rating
  • Proves alternator, regulator and load sharing
  • Transient step-load testing
  • Data logging for commissioning reports
  • Skid or containerized

In Plain Words

Resistive-Reactive Load Bank in plain words

What it does

A load bank that adds inductive (reactive) load to the resistive load, so a generator is tested at the 0.8 power factor it is actually rated for.

Pick it when

  • You must prove the generator at full kVA, not just kW
  • Generators run in parallel and load sharing must be checked
  • Specifications call for 0.8 PF testing

Better choice if…

A simple kW test is enough

FAQ

Common Questions

Generators are rated in kVA at 0.8 power factor. Testing at unity power factor never loads the alternator to its rated current, so problems in the alternator, voltage regulator or load sharing can stay hidden.
