Four reasons buildings choose dry-type
No oil, no fire risk
Air and solid insulation do the cooling. Nothing to leak, spill or burn — so no containment pit or fire vault.
Install it right where you need it
Safe indoors, near people and equipment. Shorter cable runs mean less voltage drop and lower cost.
Very little upkeep
No oil tests, no gaskets, no pumps. A yearly look, a vacuum of the coils and a tightness check is usually enough.

Low-Voltage Distribution Transformers
The transformers that feed lights, outlets, machines and drives inside a building.
- General-Purpose3 – 900 kVA · 1.2 kV classSteps building voltage down (or up) so lights, outlets and equipment get the voltage they were made for.
- Shielded Isolation3 – 900 kVA · electrostatic shieldPuts a grounded metal shield between the windings so electrical noise from the supply stops at the transformer.
- Drive Isolation5 – 900 kVA · for VFDs & DC drivesFeeds a variable-frequency or DC drive, isolating it from the plant supply and taking the extra heat and stress that drives create.
- K-Factor Rated3 – 1,000 kVA · K-4 to K-20Handles the extra heat that computers, LED drivers and other electronics create, so the transformer does not run hot or age early.
- Harmonic-Mitigating15 – 1,000 kVA · single, dual or triple outputCancels harmonic currents inside the transformer, so less heat, less noise and less distortion reach the rest of the system.
- Autotransformer3 – 1,000 kVA · voltage matchingChanges voltage by a modest amount — say 600 V to 480 V — using one shared winding, so it is smaller, lighter and cheaper than a full isolation transformer.
- Encapsulated3 – 150 kVA · sealed, indoor/outdoorSeals the core and coil in a solid resin-and-sand compound, so dust, moisture and corrosive air never touch the windings.
- Mini Power Centre5 – 45 kVA · transformer + panel in oneCombines a primary breaker, a sealed transformer and a branch-circuit panel in one wall-mounted box — a complete small power system.
- Hazardous Location3 – 150 kVA · Class I, Div. 2A sealed transformer that runs cool enough to sit where flammable gas or vapour may sometimes be present.
Medium-Voltage Power Transformers
Large dry-type power transformers for plants, campuses, data centres and renewables.
- VPI / VPE Power300 – 15,000 kVA · up to 46 kVA large, oil-free power transformer whose coils are sealed with resin under vacuum and pressure — the proven, economical choice for indoor medium-voltage service.
- Cast Coilup to 15,000 kVA · up to 46 kVEach winding is cast in solid epoxy, so moisture, dust and chemicals cannot reach it — the toughest dry-type construction there is.
- Grounding Transformerup to 46 kV · zig-zag or wye-deltaCreates a neutral point on a system that does not have one, so ground faults can be detected and cleared safely.
Control & Motor-Starting Transformers
Small transformers that keep machines, panels and motor starters working.
- Industrial Control25 – 7,500 VA · single-phaseA small transformer inside a control panel that turns line voltage into a steady 120 V or 24 V for coils, relays and PLCs.
- MV Control Power500 – 3,000 VA · up to 7.2 kVTakes power straight from a medium-voltage bus and turns it into control voltage for breaker motors, relays, heaters and lights inside the switchgear.
- Motor-Starting Auto15 – 400 HP · 50 / 65 / 80% tapsStarts a large motor at reduced voltage, so it draws far less current and the rest of the plant does not feel the dip.
Reactors, Filters & Surge Protection
Magnetics that clean up power, protect drives and motors, and calm switching surges.
- Line & Load Reactor2 – 1,250 A · 600 VA coil in series with a drive that smooths its current — on the input side it cuts harmonics and nuisance trips, on the output side it protects the motor.
- dV/dt Motor Filter2 – 320 A · 600 VSits at the drive output and slows down the steep voltage edges that long cables turn into damaging spikes at the motor.
- Air-Core Reactorup to 10,000 kVAR · up to 25 kVA large coil with no iron core that limits fault current, tunes harmonic filters or damps capacitor inrush on medium-voltage systems.
- RC Snubber2.4 – 34.5 kV · per-phase RCA resistor-capacitor network beside a transformer that soaks up the fast voltage spikes vacuum breakers can create when they switch.

Common questions
Dry-type or oil-filled — which should I choose?
Choose dry-type when the transformer goes inside a building, near people, or anywhere fire and spill rules matter. Oil-filled (liquid) units cost less at very large ratings and suit outdoor utility pads. Our guide has a side-by-side table.
What sizes do you build?
Control transformers from 25 VA, low-voltage distribution transformers up to 1,000 kVA, and medium-voltage power transformers up to 15,000 kVA three-phase at up to 46 kV class. Reactors run from 2 A to 1,250 A at low voltage and up to 10,000 kVAR at medium voltage.
Are your transformers energy efficient?
Yes. Our distribution and power transformers meet the U.S. DOE 2016 efficiency levels and the Canadian NRCan 2019 regulations. Lower temperature-rise options cut losses further.
Can a dry-type transformer go outdoors?
Yes — with a Type 3R or Type 4/4X enclosure. Encapsulated and cast-coil designs are the best fit for wet, dusty or salty sites.
How fast can I get one?
It depends on the rating and options. Common low-voltage ratings can ship quickly; check our in-stock inventory or call us and we will give you a firm date the same day.
Do you build special voltages?
Yes. Every unit is built to order in Toronto, so non-standard voltages, dual-voltage windings, special taps and custom enclosures are routine for us.
Not sure which one you need?
Send us the load, the voltages and where it’s going. A CANDRON engineer will recommend the right transformer and quote it the same business day.
